Scoring rules
- 1 arrow per target. This is the same arrow used to score Individual and Team, if applicable. If a target number has multiple targets, the archer will still only shoot one arrow. Multiple targets are present to provide additional target selection at close distance if there is not enough room for multiple arrows in the 12 ring.
- All targets are marked yardage.
- Scoring rings are 12, 10, 8, 5 (orange dots are 12 points). ONLY the center orange ring will be 12 points; the other two similar rings will be counted as the 10 ring. 10 points for the kill ring, and 8 points for the outer ring. The remainder of the target is 5 points. The insert line is not a scoring ring. See image below.
- All arrows must be scored and recorded before the target or any arrow(s) are touched.
- If an archer cannot shoot at a specified distance, he/she may approach the closer shooting marker and shoot at a closer distance. However, the archer will be moved into the Guest class and will not be eligible for awards.
- Any scoring discrepancies are decided solely by NFAA and Break the Barriers staff.
- An arrow shaft needs to touch the line to count as the next highest value. In the event the edge of the spot or scoring line has become distorted or missing from arrow impacts, the scorer must visually reconstruct the natural arc of the spot or scoring ring to determine the value of the arrow in question. Unless otherwise announced by tournament officials, cut lines, marker lines, pen or pencil lines, and indent lines marking the outside edge of the spot will be scored as the higher value.
- If an archer doesn’t agree with the arrow call by the group scorer, the archer may have everyone in the group inspect the arrow and call for a group vote, including the archer whose arrow is in question. The majority's decision will be final.
- Arrows passing through the face, but still in the butt/backstop/landscape, may be pushed back and scored as hits in the circles through which they went. This does not mean that they may be withdrawn and then stuck back through the target.
- An arrow embedded in the nock of another arrow (generally known as a robinhood) will be scored the same as the arrow it skewered.
- An archer who shoots arrows at the target in excess of the prescribed number shall lose the arrow or arrows of higher value. A penalty of one point will be assessed for each arrow shot over the prescribed numbers.
- Each group shall have two scorekeepers. There shall be two scorecards for teams (not including individual cards). Handicaps that are used must be marked on the card at the specific target; it cannot be changed once used.
- Scorecards must be signed as correct by scorekeeper and archer. Once submitted, a scorecard cannot be retrieved for purposes of changing totals. An archer who has signed and submitted a scorecard as correct which has incorrect total(s) may be disqualified.
- An archer must complete both days of scoring to be eligible for awards.
- Ties: All ties will be decided by 12-ring count except for Pro Divisions, Open Compound Team, and Open Recurve Team. Ties will be determined by a shoot-off for these divisions. The shoot-off target shall be at a known distance, chosen by a tournament official. In individual Pro Divisions, each archer will shoot one arrow. The closest to the center of the 12 ring wins the higher place position. In the case of a team shoot-off, each team member will shoot one arrow. The best team arrow closest to the center of the 12 ring will be used as the tiebreaker. The winning team will win the higher place position.
general shooting rules
- The archer must straddle an imaginary shooting line marked by the distance stake and parallel to the target face while shooting the required arrows, if possible. The archer will stand between the two marked distance stakes.
- No archer may advance to the target until all arrows have been shot by the group. Exceptions can be made for yardages that are 25 yards or less if there is not adequate room to shoot at the 12 ring. Archers may elect to shoot at a clean target after all previous archers in the group have shot and had their arrows scored.
- No archer may practice on any target of a course to be used for tournament shooting later the same day.
- In the case of an equipment failure, the archer may have the needed time as granted by a tournament official for equipment repair or replacement and may shoot arrows required to assure that the proper sight settings are accurate, within the 45-minute maximum time limit. Then, in the presence of a tournament official, be allowed to shoot the targets missed. This occurrence of repair or replacement may not happen more than once in any tournament day.
- Tripods for spotting scopes and tripods for binoculars are not be permitted.
- A three-let-down rule will be applied per arrow. A fourth let down will be counted as a shot arrow.
- Off-ground skids or glances into the target shall not be counted. Arrows striking objects over the shooting lane may be re-shot.
- A dropped arrow is one which falls while being transferred from the quiver to be nocked on the string, or in preparation for a shot, or which falls from the string during a controlled letdown. A dropped arrow may be re-shot.
- Arrows believed to have passed through the target may be re-shot with marked arrows, which will not be scored if the doubtful arrows are found in the butt/backstop/landscape. In any instance where an arrow is found to have obviously passed through in such a manner it cannot be properly scored and its location and the condition of the butt/backstop/landscape convince the group that the arrow did indeed pass through a scoring area, the archer may return to the shooting position and reshoot that arrow.
- Witnessed bounce outs, believed to have hit the target in the scoring area, will be re-shot.
- For the safety of all archers and volunteers, there is NO ALCOHOL, NO SMOKING OR PETS allowed at the tournament. No archer should shoot while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. No alcoholic beverages may be carried or consumed on any range before, during, or after shooting hours. Anyone caught breaking this rule may be immediately disqualified and not be allowed to complete the tournament or receive a refund of shooting fees already paid.
- Break the Barriers staff, the Wagner Family and NFAA staff each reserve the right to cause to be removed from the event premises, at their sole discretion, any participant, volunteer, observer, bystander and/or individual for any reason, including, without limitation: unsafe or unlawful activity; inappropriate conduct; solicitation of sponsors or participants; or interference with shooters or event planners in any manner, or with the orderly implementation and oversight of this event. No refunds will be provided, regardless of reason.
- No broadheads allowed.
- No pointing a bow and arrow at another person.
- Only trained service dogs for persons with disabilities and psychiatric service dogs allowed on property. No emotional support dogs or other dogs allowed on property. These laws include the Unruh Civil Rights Act, the California Disabled Persons Act (CDPA), and the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA).
- Remember that the arrows sticking out of a target can injure you. When pulling arrows out of a target, stand to one side and ensure that no one is directly behind you.
- If you are looking for a lost arrow behind a target, always leave your bow leaning against the target face so that it will be seen by other archers coming up. If possible, have one archer from your group stand in front of the target to prevent anyone from shooting.
- Stay on designated range paths. Never go back to the previous target or walk backwards through the course. Course must be shot in numeric order.
- No skydrawing your bow. You will be disqualified.
- Slow groups will allow the group behind to shoot through and pass them.
- No inappropriate language or behavior is allowed. No exceptions.
- No minors left unattended at any time.
- No running with archery equipment at any time.

disclosures
- All rules are subject to the interpretation of the BTB & NFAA. Any discrepancies that occur before, during, or after the tournament will be resolved and the final resolution will be made by BTB & NFAA.
- Due to terrain and water hazards, there is a possibility of losing arrows if the archer misses the target.
- By participating in the event, archers provide consent to be included in activities, programs (T.V., radio, videotaping), and to be photographed as part of the endeavor by Break the Barriers to explain the organization’s role of educating the public.
- Participants are responsible for his/her own equipment. Any equipment damaged, lost or stolen is the responsibility of the participant.
- BTB & NFAA 1 Arrow 3D National Championship Open may have or contain advertising and sponsorship from companies. Break the Barriers and the NFAA may not agree or endorse the views or opinions of the sponsors of the BTB & NFAA 1 Arrow 3D National Championship.
NFAA members can elect to participate in a new team format, introduced in 2024. Archers of the same shooting style will team up with one partner and compete for a special buckle award and the title of National Team Champion. Team partners may belong to different age divisions and gender classes. Handicaps will be offered to level the playing field. For example, an Adult Male Freestyle can team up with a Master Senior Female Freestyle in the Team Compound division. A Cub Female Barebow Recurve can team up with a Youth Male Barebow Recurve in the JUNIOR Team Barebow Recurve.
A team will shoot two arrows per target, one arrow per archer. Only the highest arrow value will be used as the team score for each target. The arrow shot by each archer will also count toward his/her individual score. All ties in the team divisions will be decided by 12-ring count except for Open Compound Team and Open Recurve Team for which a shoot-off will take place. The shoot-off target will be at a known distance, chosen by a tournament official. In the case of a shoot-off, each team member will shoot only one arrow. The best team arrow closest to the center of the 12 ring will be used as the tiebreaker.
