Pro Profile: Alex Wifler

NFAA: How old where you when you first got into archery, and how did you get your start?

Alex Wifler: I started archery when I was 11 years old, and my cousins had bows to hunt and I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. So I got a bow for my birthday and have been hooked ever since! I shot my first Vegas Shoot 9 months after starting to shoot in 2005. And I ended up taking third at NFAA Nationals my first year.

NFAA: How do you train for a tournament?

Alex Wifler: I usually train about 6 to 8 hours a day 6 days a week. I try to focus more on form than score. I will score 2 or 3 times a week. My preparation for a shoot is first checking my equipment, and then I will shoot until I feel comfortable.

NFAA: Does training for the Vegas Shoot differ from other tournaments?

Alex Wifler: For the Vegas Shoot I would put up a 3-spot and shoot, if I missed the same hole I would put up a new target. For the Vegas Shoot I score 4 or more 300 rounds a day.

NFAA: What is your life like after winning the Vegas Shoot?

Alex Wifler: My life has been a whirlwind since Vegas. For me the biggest thing that has changed my confidence. I feel like I have the confidence to shoot with the best in the world now.

NFAA: What is the biggest obstacle you had to overcome during your archery career?

Alex Wifler: I would say breaking my finger, I had to give up my Olympic dream because of it but I had to find a new dream. I am very lucky I shot compound first so it was an easier transition back, and I spent hours and hours of training. The great thing about this all, is I am still shooting today!

NFAA: What are your goals for 2016?

Alex Wifler: My goals are to shoot the best that I can be. It has been a great pleasure to be able to shoot with the best in the world.

NFAA: What's your favorite archery memory?

Alex Wifler: I know it will sound so clich?, but having my mom there when I won Vegas is a once in a lifetime thing.

NFAA: Do you have any other hobbies other than archery?

Alex Wifler: I love to play disc golf, and I have been taking and performing improv in Chicago for years. I love being on the stage, its' a great outlet from the day-to-day practice.

wifler2NFAA: Do you have any advice for aspiring archers?

Alex Wifler: Always train hard, focus on your good shoots, and listen to your coach. Don't be afraid to ask questions. The best piece of advice is to know your equipment.
