course format & assignment

  1. Archers will shoot 25 targets on Friday, 25 targets on Saturday and 20 targets on Sunday. Targets must be shot in order; archers may not skip targets.
  2. ARCHERS MUST START ON THE TARGET ASSIGNED ON THEIR SCORECARD. Changing targets without prior approval from the Registration Chairman will result in disqualification.
  3. The first target as designated on the scorecard will be for SCORE. There is no practice target.
  4. Shoot from the Western Classic stakes corresponding to your age division (Youth-Yellow; Cub-Red; PeeWee-Orange; All Other Divisions-Blue).
  5. The maximum number of archers per target is 24; archers must be split into two groups with no more than 12 archers per group unless approved by a tournament official.

shooting procedures & Safety

  1. The archer must stand along an imaginary shooting line as designated by the distance stakes.
  2. If an archer draws their bow in an unsafe manner that could result in injury as determined by the Tournament Committee, or if their arrow lands outside of the targets safety zone, that archer may be subject to disqualification.
  3. No archer shall draw a bow with the bow hand above the top of the head when drawing on a horizontal plane, parallel to the ground. This act is referred to as “high drawing” or “sky jacking.” Any archer drawing a bow in such a manner is subject to immediate disqualification.
  4. A “3 Let Down” rule will be enforced. A fourth let down will be counted as a shot arrow.

scoring rules

  1. Two arrows are shot per target. Scoring is 11-spot, 10-kill and 8-wound. Pin-on targets without a kill ring will be scored 11-spot and 10 for body hits unless marked otherwise.
  2. Scoring is determined by the position of the arrow shaft. An arrow shaft need only touch the edge of the spot, scoring line, or animal to gain the higher value. In the event the edge of the spot or scoring line has become distorted or missing from arrow impacts, the scorer must visually reconstruct the natural arc of the spot or scoring ring to determine the value of the arrow in question.
  3. Arrows which are not visible that have passed through the animal’s scoring area may be pushed back and scored so long as part of the arrow is still in the animal or backstop in which the animal is attached.
  4. No archer may advance to the target before all arrows in the group have been shot, except for targets with distances of 32 yards or less.
  5. No archer shall advance to the target and then return to the stake to shoot again unless an arrow is found to have obviously passed through the animal.
  6. Bounce outs, glance offs, and off-ground skids or glances into the target WILL NOT count. If witnessed, arrows striking an object over the shooting lanes may be re-shot.
  7. Any archer who shoots arrows at the target in excess of the prescribed number (2) shall lose the arrow or arrows of the higher value. Repeated arrows such as a test arrow or arrows for a bet shall deem the archer subject to disqualification. Any arrow shot into two separate targets loses the arrow of higher value.
  8. A shot arrow is an arrow that has been propelled by the string. A shot arrow may not be reshot.
  9. A dropped arrow is an arrow that is inadvertently dropped while being transferred from the quiver to the bow or one which falls from the bow. A dropped arrow may be reshot. An arrow that is accidentally released in preparation of a shot or during a controlled let down and has landed 10 feet or less from the shooting position may also be reshot.
  10. No archer will go behind a target to look for lost arrows unless the arrow can be seen at the time of scoring. If the archer cannot see the arrow, make a note and return with a range official after the round.
  11. For doubtful arrow calls, if there is a disagreement with score callers, a third caller from the group (other than the archer whose arrow is in question) will make the final call. In all cases, the third call is final.
  12. In the case of equipment failure, the archer may have the needed time, as granted by a tournament official, for equipment repair or replacement and may shoot arrows required to assure that the proper sight settings are accurate, within the 45 minute time limit. Then, in the presence of the tournament official, be allowed to shoot the targets missed. This occurrence may not happen more than once in any tournament day.
  13. Tie-breaker procedures for the NFAA Marked 3D National Championships shall be as follows:
  • Ties in the amateur division will be broken using the following criteria in order, (1) highest number of bonus rings, (2) highest number of 22s, (3) highest number of 21s, (4) the highest score during regular competition on a pre-designated target selected by the Tournament Director prior to the start of competition. If the tie persists after all tie-breaking measures have been applied, dual winners shall be declared. No shoot-offs will be conducted for any placement in the amateur divisions.
  • Ties in the professional divisions will be broken by the number of 12 Rings; except in the case of a first place tie.  When this occurs, a sudden death shoot-off will take place.  All shooters tied for 1st place will shoot one (1) arrow.  The arrow which is determined to be the closest to the 12 ring will be declared the winner.  If two shooters tie by being the same distance to the 12 ring, they will shoot until the tie is broken.

equipment rules

  1. All shooting styles will abide with the Western Classic and current NFAA equipment rules. In the event of a conflict, the Western Classic rules prevail. Tournament Officials will judge any equipment rulings.
  2. Tripods for spotting scopes and tripods for binoculars shall not be permitted.

scorecards & results

  1. Both sets of scorecards must be turned in all three days. Scores will be posted online via IANSEO. The scorekeepers for each group need to pick up scorecards by 7:30am on Saturday and Sunday. (Note: scorecards will be filed under the FRIDAY starting target.) On Sunday, scorecards must be turned in with both scorekeepers and archer initials. Anyone signing an incorrect scorecard is subject to disqualification.
  2. Scorecards must be turned in on Friday and Saturday within 30 minutes after the last group finishes shooting. After the announcement Sunday afternoon to end shooting, you will have 30 minutes to turn in your scores. Scorecards turned in after that time will not be posted.
  3. Both Team Shooters must sign their scorecards. Scorecards will not be accepted without proper signatures.
  4. It is the archer's responsibility to verify the information listed on their scorecards. Be sure to check the name, style and class as printed. If a correction is necessary, the archer must notify the registration desk. Corrections will not be accepted after 3:00 pm Saturday.

conduct & Range etiquette

  1. In order to keep the tournament flowing smoothly, maximize the shooting line. If there are one or more open targets in front and two or more groups back up, the delaying group shall allow backed up groups to shoot through.
  2. Absolutely no alcoholic beverages may be carried or consumed on any range during shooting hours. Anyone caught breaking this rule will be immediately disqualified and removed from the course.
  3. Please be courteous to other archers. Keep conversations low while others are shooting.

protests & official authority

  1. All rules are subject to the interpretation of the Tournament Committee. Rulings affecting the NFAA Marked 3D National Championships are subject to review and validation by the NFAA Protest Committee, consisting of the Tournament Director, NFAA President, one (1) Councilman, and two (2) Directors present at the tournament. If this full composition is not available, the NFAA President may appoint alternate members at their discretion to fulfill the committee.
  2. Protests must be submitted in writing accompanied by a $50 protest fee to the registration desk within 30 minutes following the end of the day’s shooting.

The NFAA Marked 3D National Championships will will be conducted in accordance with the NFAA Bylaws, Article I, and NFAA Bylaws, Article VI, Section K. In the event of a conflict between those bylaws and the Tournament Rules published on this page, the Tournament Rules shall prevail.
