Hitting the Mark — Archery Shines at Land O’ Lakes

This past weekend, the Florida Senior Games welcomed archers from across the state to the Florida Archery Association–hosted archery competition held at the scenic Land O’ Lakes Recreation Center Soccer Fields in Land O’ Lakes, FL.

Participants gathered early for check-in and final announcements before taking aim at a full NFAA 900 Target Round — the classic “900” American round. Under this format, each archer shot 90 arrows: 30 from 60 yards, 30 from 50 yards, and 30 from 40 yards, with five ends of six arrows per distance.

Archers competed in several styles — from Compound to Recurve and Barebow — across all age divisions.

The competition was open entry: no prior qualification was required, making the event accessible for longtime archers and newcomers alike.

Safety, fairness, and tradition guided the event. Shooters followed rules aligned with the National Field Archery Association (NFAA) and the Florida Archery Association, including a whistle-controlled shooting line, regulated target faces, and strict scoring protocols — including using “X”-ring hits as tiebreakers.

In all, the weekend delivered a remarkable display of marksmanship, sportsmanship, and community spirit. For many participants, it was not only about the score but also about honoring the tradition and camaraderie of Florida archery.
